Very cool. Love the angled sockets, rather than the "opposite" configuration.

What a great idea!

Question about the light bulbs. Do they give off as much light as florencence (sp). I really like what you have done. Maybe making one of my own, really would like to use energy saving bulbs.

Pamela, they don't give off the same "kind" of light. You also don't go by the "equal to" value of them, that's just a reference to regular lightbulbs by comparison, not fluorescents. When calculating "watts per gallon" go by the watts they USE, not the "equal to" wattage.

They do run a little warm, so be aware of that.

That said, I use 4 of them (25w each) over my planted 33g and my plants go nuts.

Also, anything over 2 wpg, you HAVE TO DOSE FERTS and some sort of carbon source, whether DIY CO2 or Flourish Excel, or you will will will will get nasty hair algae taking over the tank.

i'm not sure that the 2wpg rule really holds. i have two 25 watt fluorescent bulbs with an "equal to" that's a lot higher than 25 on a 10 gallon tank. so that's at least 5wpg. i do not dose ferts or carbon source. i don't have co2 pumping in there (aside from what the airpump pumps in), and i have no hair algae at all. i do have a little of the algae that sticks to the glass, but that's it.

does the 2wpg only supposed to be for certain tanks? like ones that are over or under stocked or have lots or only a few plants?

2 wpg is basically what you need to grow anything other than Java Moss, Java Fern, crypts, bolbitis, and other "lowlight" plants.

With more than that, and light plant stocking, eventually you will get an algae outbreak (been there, still doing that).

Remember, if you have 2 bulbs of 13w, "equal to" 60w each, you don't have 120w, you have 26w over your tank.

For some reason my 10g with 46w over it doesn't get the algae like the 33 with 100w over it. From what I remember, smaller, and much larger tanks, the "wpg" rule breaks down somewhat. Also, the colour temperature of the bulbs does make a bit of difference.
