I just found this on a Killie website, but looks awsome for snails. This can easily be adapted to set up the perfect head room for your snails and do continuous slow water changes. This would mean no more large water changes, just a weekly or as-needed vacuuming.

I'd just put in a sponge filter and this should be good for baby fish (which is what it is for) shrimp & snails.

Yes this is a clever design it has some drawbacks but for the $$ involved it's well worth it. I've more and more started to use sumps for my fish tanks as snailtanks, this setup makes it easy to convert a tank. In FW the flow though such a system does not need to be big.
