Another pet store with empty shells!

So I went to a local pet store last week to pick up another fish tank and I couldn't help but to look at the fish and snails. I saw that they had "Candy Snails" advertised and I asked the pet store worker if they were apple snails and she didn't know. She said they were candy snails (fancy wording for mystery snails I guess).

When I looked in the tank, all I could see where empty shells! Tons of them. No live snails in sight!

How sad. I'm glad my snails are well fed and properly cared for. I would hate to have a tank with....empty shells.

Hmm... I've never heard of candy snails. I used to work for a big box store, (actually became manager of the pet department, so I was in charge of all the animals in the store). We regularly went through and pulled all the dead fish/snails from our tanks to keep them looking nice/healthy etc. Our fish and snails were shipped to us from I think FL and that was stressful on them, not to mention being kept in very large groups in small surroundings, so having a dead fish here or there was inevitable. Getting them out of the tanks quickly so that the water quality was not affected and so the customers didn't see them was important. I often found though that the associates overlooked the snails and left the empty shells in the tank. I don't know if they were afraid of pulling a live snail by mistake (once a shell is empty it's a good clue the snail is dead!), or if they were just being lazy. But, when I went through and pulled the deads, I would usually get a bunch of snail shells. Not always to many other fish. If our system were in good working shape, we wouldn't have too many losses. Sometimes, we'd get great batches of snails, and sometimes we'd get sickly batches of snails. We always fed them weekend feeders, sinking foods --shrimp pellets and algae wafers, and zucchini, so they were not starved in our store.

The pet store is called Aquarium Adventure. There's not many around. I'm not sure why they labeled them candy snails other than maybe they thought the looked like candy? They are almost peach colored. Like a gold mixed mystery.

On the otherhand, I used to do pet food demos at Petsmart and I became good friends with the fish department manager and she took really good care of her snails. Fresh veggies every morning and fish food.

I seems like it all depends on the workers and the workers knowledge of snails. Not too many people know about snails it seems like.

It can depend on the workers knowledge of snails, but at the big box I worked at (petsmart), we had to feed all the animals (fish included) according to corporate protocol. If the stores were following the rules, the snails got weekend feeders, zucchini and fish food (sinking stuffs like algae wafers and shrimp pellets) on a regular basis.
