Tentacles?

Postby teff on Sat Nov 10, 2012 7:44 pm

Many posts refer to tentacles on apple snails. Are these the snails' "antennas"? Or are these real separate tentacles of some of the species? I do see Marisas using their antennas as tentacles, holding drowned insects, etc.

The tentacles and antenna are the same, though I would think antenna is a term applied more to insects.

tentacle
Definition
ten·ta·cle[ téntək'l ]ten·ta·cles Plural

NOUN
1. long flexible organ: a long flexible organ around the mouth or on the head of some animals, especially invertebrates such as squid, used in holding, grasping, feeling, or moving
2. hair on plant leaf: a sticky glandular hairy projection from the leaf of an insect-eating plant such as the sundew, whose secretions trap and digest prey
3. something far-reaching: something that gradually insinuates its influence or control ( literary ) ( usually used in the plural )
[ Mid-18th century. < modern Latin tentaculum < Latin temptare "feel, try" ]

Morphologically related? Yes, as in they both have them and they can perform similar actions, with the exception of capturing and holding prey/food.
