Is there a standard way to measure a snail?

Snails are kind of an inconvenient shape to quantify. Is anyone aware of a standard way to measure their overall size and/or shell size.

You can use the handy dandy calculator at the bottom of this page:

While the calculations measure the volume of the shell, it also shows you the proper way to measure the shell as well.
