Shell: The shell of this large African
apple snail species reaches 125-129 mm height. The spire is short and the shell
opening (aperture) is round at the bottom and sharp at the top. The umbilicus
is wide and deep, the lip is somewhat thickened.
The colour varies from brown to bright olive green with a few, faint reddish
spiral bands.
Operculum: almost 2 times higher than wide, calcified.
Body: ?
Eggs: The calcareous, white eggs are deposited above the waterline.
Food: Various water plants.
Behaviour: Prefers stagnant water (swamps, flood-planes).
Distribution: Tropical Africa to South Sudan and Mali to Egypt.
Name: Named after the Greman traveller Werne, who made an expitition to
the White Nile region in 1840-1841.
